"On the 13th, the Korea-China Cultural Center and the Busan International Film Festival held the '1st Korea-China Film Scenario Forum' at the Busan Creative Economy Innovation Center in Haeundae-gu, Busan, during the 22nd Busan International Film Festival in 2017.
The forum, led by Jung Young-beom, CEO of Star Jay Entertainment, and moderated by Do Sung-hee, director of the Han-China Film and Television Academy at the Beijing Entertainment Preparatory School, who produced films such as 'The Confession of Lee Jai-su,' 'Secret Love,' and the adaptation of 'The Millennium Boat.' Other participants included the producer of 'Two-faced Girlfriend,' the producer of 'The Strongest Romance,' the writer of 'My Sassy Girl,' and the writers of 'Manipulated City' and 'My Marriage Expedition.' Panelists included Shan Dongbing, the producer of 'Yongho Gate' and 'Janggang 7,' and Tienbo, the scenario writer of 'Lost in White.' The forum focused on creating a common platform for continuous development and exchange between the film industries of both countries, centered around the fundamental element of filmmaking, the scenario.
Shan Dongbing mentioned the challenges of Korean films in the Chinese market, emphasizing the need for 'Localization in China' as the key to success. He pointed out that understanding the values and worldview of Chinese youth and the middle class is crucial for capturing their hearts through cultural products. Shan Dongbing cited the success of the Chinese version of 'My Sassy Girl,' titled '20 Once Again,' as an example of successful localization.
He also addressed the differences in values and worldview between China and Korea, attributing them to the influence of Communist Party education in China. Shan Dongbing noted that before the THAAD issue, these differences were not as apparent, and Chinese audiences even criticized Chinese directors. He concluded that producing locally relevant films is essential for success in the Chinese market.
The '1st Korea-China Film Scenario Forum' aimed to provide a platform for discussing the continuous development and revitalization of the film industries of both countries, with a focus on the fundamental element of filmmaking, the scenario. The 22nd Busan International Film Festival runs for ten days from the 12th to the 22nd, screening at five theaters with 32 screens, including the Busan Cinema Center, Lotte Cinema Centum City, CGV Centum City, and Megabox. This year's festival features 298 films from 75 invited countries."
